An Open Letter To President Trump From Bob Serody

An Open Letter to Donald Trump

Mr. Trump. You are not my president.  Your performance has been a disgrace to this nation and to the rest of our neighbors around the world.  Each day brings forth more violence because of your rhetoric and race-baiting speeches. Let me review the last two weeks starting with Jamal Khashoggi, the Washington Post columnist whose home was Saudi Arabia. In spite of the danger from criticizing Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman with his objective reporting, he walked into the Saudi Arabian consulate in Istanbul, Turkey, and was brutally murdered by a hit team that then dismembered his body. Your initial response was to emphasize that arms sales to Saudi Arabia overshadowed this horrific murder.

Then there were the pipe bomb incidents in which explosive devices were mailed to various leaders of the Democratic Party, including two previous presidents.  When it was determined that the culprit was a sick individual with hate stickers all over his van showing that he was a staunch Trump supporter, you expressed disappointment that these incidents occurred just before the midterm elections, and then you blamed the press for this person’s behavior.  You couldn’t admit that your ranting against the press and your race-baiting diatribe to fire up your base was the catalyst for the increase in hate crimes across America.

This was followed by an attack on the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh during a religious child-naming celebration. A deranged individual killed at least eleven worshippers before police and SWAT teams managed to subdue the killer, who was armed with an assault rifle and three handguns. Four police officers were wounded during their brave attempt to overcome him. You had no choice but to call this a hate crime, as indicated by the man’s social media outbursts, but then you mentioned that the outcome would have been better if the synagogue had added its own security. This anti-Semitic person actually believed that there was a Jewish conspiracy to overpower the American Christian community. The absurdity of this claim was made even more bizarre by the fact that only two percent of Americans are Jewish.  Yet there has been a rise in anti-Semitic attacks across the country. As you travel among the red states to rally your base with a spate of hate-filled remarks against those you consider your enemies, and you continue your attacks on the fourth estate, you are fanning the flames among the very people who are looking for an excuse to engage in racial violence. Thanks to you, we are returning to the dark ages when lies were spread across Europe to persecute the Jews. We now see that you are painting immigrants attempting to seek political asylum in this country with the same brush. Those parents who are detained by ICE are even separated from their children as a cruel form of punishment.

A president of your demeanor and divisiveness would have been stopped months ago by members of your own party through the normal checks and balances established by our country’s founders. However, the Republican Congress is mostly mute and cowers before your threats.  The Republicans have surrendered their sense of morality and justice in order to protect their Congressional seats. When was the last time a Republican uttered the name of Abraham Lincoln or Theodore Roosevelt? The Republican Party is now only a remnant of its former greatness.

Your inexperience in world affairs is also deeply troubling, and your unchecked policies with other countries are undermining world stability and peace. You are diminishing our leadership role in the world by emboldening our enemies and distancing our allies. How much longer can we wait before your behavior triggers a crisis resulting in armed conflict or worse, nuclear confrontation?

There is only one answer, and that is my hope that the beginning of the end of your tenure will be decided by the outcome of the midterm elections. I’m confident that the many Americans who cast their votes will recognize that you are a real threat to both our national security and our freedom, and that you must be replaced.
