Bob Serody's Letter to Sen. Collins

Written by  Team SCPA

Dear Senator Collins:

You’ve heard from me twice before regarding my concerns over your vote on the confirmation of Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court. Yes, I forewarned you along with many other concerned citizens on the impact of this crucial decision on our civil liberties.

The temperament of this man was demonstrated during his accusation that “those left-leaning Democratic senators had colluded with the Clintons to wreak revenge on his good name”. Even retired Supreme Court Justice Stevens came forward to warn that this man was not fit to serve on the highest court. This unprecedented word of advice should not have come as a surprise. Professor Ford also had the guts to come forward in spite of death threats to reveal what happened to her when she was a teenager. She stated that she was 100 percent certain that the drunken braggart and rapist on top of her was Kavanaugh; yet you brushed it off by saying that although you “believed she had been attacked,” you had to rely on his presumption of innocence. Your ‘conclusion’ should have been challenged by the many lies he gave during hours of testimony and his final unsettling outburst, which he later partially recanted in an op-ed for the Wall Street Journal.

Kavanaugh’s name was submitted by right-wing organizations, and Trump was obviously influenced by his position favoring the power of the presidency over the other two branches of government, a direct contradiction of the equal checks and balances guaranteed by the Constitution.

I believed you are a moderate Republican, and that you sympathize with women regarding their present social status. Surely, you’ve heard the shouts of the “Me Too” movement resounding in the streets of our cities during this debate. How could you take the chance of voting yes, given this man’s questionable background, when all the warning signs were so apparent?

Finally, why didn’t you heed the warnings and advice of your fellow senator and friend, Lisa Murkowski, who said that because two of our branches of government have been compromised by hatred and distrust, our only remaining hope is the Judicial Branch? She could see, given all the previous testimony and investigative research, that it was too risky to confirm Kavanaugh. She might have added that his confirmation would be placing two sexual predators on the Supreme Court.

Senator Collins, I feel sad that in spite of my feeling you are an intelligent and compassionate woman, this decision will haunt you for the rest of your life. When it comes to your legacy, this one moment will establish how you will be remembered.

Sincerely yours,

Robert Serody
