Legislature didn't listen to Florida voters

… This year, the Florida Legislature showed its total disdain for voters, doing a spectacular job of ignoring many issues that the citizens had supported by their votes or voices.

Polls show that 68 percent of voters supported expanding health care to Florida's working poor. Our legislators chose to turn away $2.8 billion in federal funding to expand health care to about 800,000 Floridians because of political posturing, while continuing to accept inexpensive health care for their part-time jobs for them and their families. This is wrong and uncaring and will drive the cost of health care up for all of us.

Matt Reed of the FLORIDA TODAY estimated that hospitals shift the cost of unpaid bills to those of us who can pay, amounting to a hidden tax of $1,700 to $2,300 per hospital bill.

An overwhelming majority of Floridians voted for Amendment 1, which required Florida to spend at least $740 million on land preservation and maintenance. Totally ignoring this vote, the Legislature appropriated only $17.4 million toward land preservation and chose to do a lottery type scam with the rest — paying general fund items like salaries. …
