SCPA 1st Thurs: Health Care!

Written by  Team SCPA

6:30pm Thurs. June 5, 2014
Front Street Civic Center, 2205 Front Street, downtown Melbourne FL 32901
Free and open to the public. Donations gratefully accepted.

Three featured speakers:

Dr. Dan Woodard
Daniel Woodard is a board certified emergency physician who has practiced in Brevard County for the past twenty-five years. He also works in the space program -- he has supported over one hundred shuttle launches -- in medical research, where he studies the biochemistry of Alzheimer's disease.

Health care is an extraordinarily complicated issue. In general, improving health care for the poor means higher taxes for the rich and middle class. Making health care more affordable means more stress on providers. There are no easy answers. But there is a way for the working poor to get routine care that can prevent many emergencies -- and save local taxpayers about $1 million per month in Brevard, and comparable amounts in Indian River County.

See 'Accepting Medicaid expansion in Florida would save money,' by Dr. Woodard; and 'If Gov. Scott is can-do guy, why doesn't Florida have Medicaid expansion?'

Jo Shim
Jo Shim, MBA, MT(ASCP) is a Medical Laboratory Scientist currently working on an International Laboratory project for Johns Hopkins University. She is a member of the League of Women Voters of the Space Coast and serves as co-chair of the Health Care Committee. Jo is originally from the United Kingdom and has practical experience with the British National Health Service (NHS).

Shim will discuss the Medicaid program and the Supreme Court decisions regarding patient protection, the Affordable Care Act, the current status of health care expansion up to the end of the 2014 legislative session, and the socio-economic impact of expanding health care in Florida.
