The Day We Fight Back
Against Mass Surveillance

Tuesday, Feb 11, 2014 marks the day we fight back. The SPCA website is participating in this day of action against the newly discovered, all pervasive, and illegal surveillance by government agencies including the NSA! This action is initiated by some of the stalwart defenders of privacy and constitutional protections like the ACLU, Electronic Frontier Foundation, and popular crowd-sourced news sites like reddit.

While we here at the SCPA call ourselves progressive, this issue of unconstitutional overreach by big brother spans the entire political spectrum: up, down, left, right, and center. ALL of us are being watched. Of course, our government claims that this surveillance is performed (in our name) to stop terrorism but upon close scrutiny can demonstrate zero examples where it has done so. And by massively collecting everything the public does by phone, electronic communication or online, our.gov has a created a very difficult time for itself in discovering ACTUAL terrorist activity.

Instead, our spy agencies are creating these tools to stifle political dissent, conduct blackmail against perceived enemies both foreign and domestic and this even includes corporate espionage. This surveillance state is one more example among many where public monies are thereby transferred to huge defense contractors and by defining any form of political dissent as a form of terrorism, they attempt to justify massive and secretive "black" budgets.

So how do we fight back? By calling on our congressional representatives and reminding them we will vote them out of office for failing to protect the constitution and by taking away any sense of privacy we might still have. We should remind them that they too are under illegal surveillance by spy agencies and by the citizenry exercising our vote, raising our voices, and through political dissent.
