Occupy Melbourne Florida Black Friday Protest Supported by ‘Melbourne Main Street’

Representatives of ‘Melbourne Main Street’ met yesterday with Occupy Melbourne Florida’s Direct Action Working Group to express their support for the Black Friday protest. “Our message is really quite simple” said Mandy Elliott, one of the event’s organizers, “shop and buy from independently-owned, local businesses during this holiday season.

According to Laird Gann, Executive Director of Melbourne Main Street, “this goal is in sync with historic Main Street programs nationwide – promoting the benefits and values of shopping in older downtown districts that were once the backbone of the American economy”. Melbourne Main Street was formed in 2004 and is one of some 50 programs located throughout Florida.

Black Friday protestors will assemble in the southwest parking area of the Melbourne Square Mall on the morning of November 25th in support of local merchants displaced by giant national retailers. At 10:00 am, participants will begin a four-mile march towards historic downtown Melbourne.

March organizers expect the protestors to arrive in the business district around 2:00 pm. A variety of educational and outreach events are planned, including teach-ins, soapbox speeches, and working group meetings. The afternoon events are scheduled to provide march participants with time to do some of their holiday shopping in the downtown area.  Event planners are encouraging everyone to pay with cash and thus avoid the bank fees charged to merchants when a sale is made using a credit card.

The Black Friday event will end at 7:00 pm, when a meeting of the Occupy Melbourne Florida General Assembly is called to order (at a downtown location to be determined.)
