LGBTQ: A Closer Look, Past-Present-Future Featured

Written by  Team SCPA
Please join us Thursday, June 6th, at 6:30 p.m. at the Front Street Civic Center, 2205 Front Street, Melbourne, FL
Historians remind us that those who fail to learn from the past are doomed to repeat it. Throughout the history of our species, those who are different have been treated as outcasts, attacked, vilified, imprisoned and even murdered. Those of different ethnicity, skin color or sexual orientation have faced unspeakable horrors for millennia, but slowly -- bit by bit -- it seems that Progressive civilization has awakened us to value our differences as the strengths that they truly are.
The world is changing. The pendulum swings, but progress is real.
It was 50 years ago, that the police violently attacked the "Stonewall Inn", an LGBTQ bar in the Greenwich Village section of New York City. The bloody police action against the non-violent patrons of the Stonewall  and the uprising that resulted, shocked many Americans of all backgrounds, and began a long struggle for awakening, tolerance, and acceptance that has blossomed in the developed world.
Our panel will look back into this history to look at where we've been, and will gauge where LGBTQ rights and protections are today, so that we can all look to the future with a more seasoned eye of what is to come.
Our Speakers:
Gina Duncan: Director of TransAction of Equality Florida - highlighting key legislative issues and concerns of the LGBTQ+ community
Kat Parks: Eau Gallie High School Student  representing the Gay Straight Alliance (GSA) - key issues and concerns - Youth Perspective
Cortney Thompson: President of Space Coast Pride to discuss the Mission Vision of Pride and Allies and Initiatives.....
We will close the event looking to the future. Quite a bit has been experienced in the generations since the days of Stonewall...
We will be offering appetizers from a local caterer - Brandon Milam -- from The Twisted Rooster.
Tablers will include the scLGBTA Democratic Caucus, Space Coast Pride, and more.
An interactive Q&A will follow the panel discussion.

FREE & open to the public.
