Action: Brevard County considers stormwater fee

Written by  Team SCPA

Update Friday, April 4, 2014 at 5:20pm

Brevard County Commissioners vote 4-1 for added stormwater fee

[Ed. note: we feel a vote FOR increased stormwater fee was obvious, common-sense support for restoration of Indian River Lagoon. A vote AGAINST the increased fee is, uh, inexplicable, given the situation in the lagoon. It is reported that Commissioner Anderson voted for the fee, because city of his residence, Palm Bay, already pays a higher stormwater fee.]

VOTING FOR: Commissioners Robin Fisher,  Chuck Nelson, Mary Bolin Lewis, Andy Anderson. Ok to send them a thank you for common sense but over-due care for Indian River Lagoon!

VOTING AGAINST: Commissioner Trudi Infantini

Vince Lamb, one of the supporters working for the Indian River Lagoon restoration, shared this report:

By Vince Lamb

The Brevard County Commission voted tonight 4-1 to increase the Stormwater Utility Fee to $52 per year for the next two years and then to $64 for FY 2017.  According to Ernie Brown, qualifying for state and federal grants requires a minimum fee of $51.60 so this amount is sufficient for that purpose.

Comm. Trudie Infantini voted against the motion. She indicated that she could not vote for the fee increase while Brevard County is providing rax funds for a shopping center in Titusville or a Visitor Welcome Center on I-95 (funded by the TDC from hotel taxes).

Approximately fifty people spoke tonight with perhaps 30 opposed to a fee increase and 20 favoring the increase to help the Lagoon. Without the 20 speakers in support of the increase, this measure would likely have failed.

My thanks to the four commissioners who voted for the fee increase, the 20 people who spoke in support and the others who attended in support of the additional monies for stormwater projects.  I am also greatly appreciative of Ernie Brown and the NRMO team who prepared the materials that show the importance of stormwater projects that remove nutrients.

ACTION!

Public Hearing: Brevard County Commissioners consider stormwater drainage fee

5pm Thurs. April 3, at Brevard County Commission, Viera Govt. Center

Jim Waymer in Florida Today: "Would you be willing to pay an extra $2.35 a month to cleanse the runoff that's ruining the Indian River Lagoon?" It seems Commissioner Trudi Infantini is not so sure. A strong show of citizen support is needed to get votes for drainage fee increase -- which is currently low compared to other counties.

Attend the hearing, or, if you cannot attend, call send supportive email. See contact info below.

Maureen Rupe, Partnership for a Sustainable Future: We can not support the Lagoon without supporting this (increased stormwater drainage fee). We must put our money where our mouth is. Everything we do from now on to save the lagoon, is essential to our economy, and Public health. If we want quality of Life, we have to pay for it.

CONTACT BREVARD COUNTY COMMISSIONERS

TIPS
Elected public officials do keep track of how many visits, calls, letters, and emails they receive on a topic. To influence County Commissioners, a personal visit can be best. Next best is a phone call. Next best is a letter. Easiest and sometimes least effective, but a whole lot better than nothing, is email -- especially if there is a lot of 'original content' email messages on same topic.
